Aladdin - The Return Of Jafar is the second installment in the Aladdin animated film series, released in 1994 as a direct-to-video sequel to the 1992 blockbuster Aladdin. The film follows the adventures of Aladdin, Jasmine, Genie, Abu, and Iago as they face a new threat from the evil sorcerer Jafar, who has escaped from his lamp and seeks revenge on Aladdin and his friends. The film features the voices of Scott Weinger, Linda Larkin, Jonathan Freeman, Gilbert Gottfried, Dan Castellaneta, Jason Alexander, Frank Welker, and Val Bettin.
The film was produced by Walt Disney Television Animation and directed by Toby Shelton, Tad Stones, and Alan Zaslove. It was the first Disney direct-to-video sequel and the first Disney animated film to feature a new voice actor for Genie, as Robin Williams refused to reprise his role due to a dispute with Disney over the use of his voice in the marketing of the first film. Dan Castellaneta, best known for voicing Homer Simpson in The Simpsons, took over the role of Genie and also voiced the Peddler in the opening scene.

The film received mixed reviews from critics and fans, who praised the animation quality and the voice acting of Freeman and Gottfried, but criticized the story, the songs, and the replacement of Williams with Castellaneta . The film was also a commercial success, selling more than 15 million VHS copies and becoming one of the best-selling non-theatrical releases of all time. The film was followed by another direct-to-video sequel, Aladdin and the King of Thieves (1996), which featured the return of Williams as Genie.
Plot
The film begins with a band of thieves led by Abis Mal raiding a caravan in the desert. They are ambushed by Aladdin and Abu, who steal their loot and give it to the poor people of Agrabah. Aladdin returns to the palace and reunites with Jasmine and Genie, who has returned from his travels around the world. Meanwhile, Iago escapes from Jafar's lamp, which is still in the Cave of Wonders, and decides to betray Jafar and live his own life. He meets Aladdin and saves his life from Abis Mal, who has recovered Jafar's lamp. Aladdin decides to give Iago a chance to reform and hides him in the palace.
Jafar orders Abis Mal to rub his lamp and free him from his imprisonment. He then plots to get revenge on Aladdin and take over Agrabah. He disguises himself as Jasmine's father, the Sultan, and orders Aladdin to be executed for kidnapping him. Iago manages to free Genie from a magic cage that Jafar had trapped him in and they rescue Aladdin from the executioner. They then expose Jafar's deception and engage in a battle with him. Jafar proves to be too powerful for them and traps them in various objects. He then reveals himself to Jasmine and tries to force her to marry him.
Iago, who feels guilty for his involvement in Jafar's scheme, decides to help his new friends and steals Jafar's lamp from Abis Mal. He flies to the palace and attempts to smash the lamp, but Jafar blasts him away. Aladdin catches Iago and throws him back at Jafar's lamp, causing it to shatter and destroy Jafar once and for all. Iago survives the blast and is welcomed by Aladdin and his friends as a hero. Genie then repairs the palace and restores everything to normal. Aladdin apologizes to Jasmine for lying to her about Iago and she forgives him. They then embrace each other as Genie congratulates them.

The film was praised for its animation quality and the voice acting of Freeman and Gottfried, who reprised their roles from the first film. However, the film was criticized for its story, which was considered to be weak and predictable, and its songs, which were deemed to be inferior to those of the first film. The film was also compared unfavorably to the first film, which was widely regarded as a classic and one of the best Disney animated films of all time. The replacement of Williams with Castellaneta as Genie was also a major point of contention, as many fans felt that Castellaneta lacked the charisma and improvisational skills of Williams.
The film was a commercial success, selling more than 15 million VHS copies and becoming one of the best-selling non-theatrical releases of all time. The film also spawned a TV series, Aladdin, which ran from 1994 to 1996 and featured most of the cast from the film, except for Freeman and Alexander, who were replaced by Jonathan Brandis and Jim Cummings respectively. The film was followed by another direct-to-video sequel, Aladdin and the King of Thieves (1996), which featured the return of Williams as Genie and concluded the Aladdin trilogy.
